Redefine Democracy

On 26th January, the Indian government celebrated republic day with full zeal. The day was marked to celebrate constitutional and democratic achievements. India showed its military might by displaying different sorts of weapons to the overall public and to the entire world through electronic and medium . it’s widely believed that India is that the largest democracy, following regular periodic elections and its democratic institutions are considered best among the planet .
Democracy isn’t a replacement phenomenon. Though in some different forms it did exist within the past. Generally, it’s believed that democracy originated from Greek city-states. there’s no agreed-upon definition of democracy. Different scholars have defined democracy differently. In dictionary, democracy is defined as “a government during which the supreme power is vested within the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections”. Scholars also described democracy consistent with their own understanding. just like the former US president Lincoln said about Democracy as “government of the people, by the people, and for the people”.

In 20th century, democracy touched its new heights. At the beginning of the century, WWI destroyed the prevailing political landscape in Europe and other parts of the planet . the previous US president Wilson maintained a stance that his country has entered war I to form this world safe for democracy. the planet had witnessed another brutal war in 1939 but after the top of the planet War II, things changed dramatically. With decolonization, many newly emerged states have adopted a democratic sort of government. Communism was the sole threat that democracy was facing at that point .

But after the disintegration of the USSR, democracy has reached its highest point. When Francis Fukuyama wrote his famous essay ‘The End of History?‘ consistent with Fukuyama, liberal democracies had triumphed over the various sorts of government and now we’ll not see any robust ideological struggle against this liberal democratic system. Many other scholars gave different theories to explain how the democratic sort of government is best than others. Democratic peace theory is one among them. consistent with this theory, democracies seldom attend war with one another and if we wish to form this world peaceful, it’ll be an honest idea to possess a democratic sort of government within the whole world.

Western countries have invested heavily to spread this democratic norm within the Third World . Even a number of them were invaded and their sort of government was changed. i.e. the US invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003 and installed a democratic sort of government. it’s also called ‘Bush Doctrine’ because this was the policy adopted by former US president George W Bush. Although it had been not a really fine experience. But it gave us a fine example of how democracy beholds some places and was extended to other parts from its origin.
Now, we’ve the most important number of democratic states than they were present in any era throughout the history. This democratic proliferation is supported by a free-market economy. Even the dictatorships like present in North Korea also called itself the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and committed communist states like China has transformed its economy consistent with the principles of the capitalist world. International regimes also are helping states to create strong democratic institutions.

So, if everything goes the way it’s needed to be then where does the matter exist!? Why the human civilization doesn’t reach point where the essential needs of each person are fulfilled. there’s a good range of violation of basic human rights. Do this stuff happen only in states where authoritarian sort of government is present or they’re present in modern liberal democracies?

To answer of these questions we’ll now consider the case of the most important democracy of the planet . India, a multi-ethnic country with a robust form of government and quite one billion population is taken into account because the largest democracy within the world. But what’s happening in India is sort of a special story.

Economically, Indian is now amongst the strongest states within the world. it’s an enormous economy of about $2.80 trillion. But the income inequality is at new heights now. 73 you look after the entire wealth is controlled by the highest 1% population. India still has the very best number of poor people within the world. While democracies always claimed that they’re more curious about civil and political rights than economic, social and cultural ones. this is often the most important debate between two competing concepts. Now we’ll provides a brief check out civil and political rights. India occupied the disputed Kashmir region way back , reports always emerged about the human rights violation within the small valley. it’s implemented a draconian armed force special power act there. But on August 05, 2019, India revoked the special semi-autonomous status of the Kashmir region without the consent of the government or local population.

Since then many people are caged within the small valley by Indian security forces. Even the Indian Army is running concentration camps there. Though detail of those camps isn’t disclosed thus far former Indian army chief and current chief of defense staff accepted the existence of those camps. Kashmiris are still living under the threat of genocide with none end in view of this problem. Thousands are protesting (which turned sometimes violent) against the adoption of latest citizenship law by the Indian government. By adopting this law India has embraced an anti-Muslim stance. it’s also a rustic where human rights activists face big problems. they’re detained by government authorities and harassed through different means. Women face lifestyle violence within the shape of sexually assault, harassment at the workplace and thru other means. Different social and ethnic groups are marginalized and abused by superior class with none help from the govt . The story is extremely long that it’ll take ages on behalf of me to pour it out.

This is the story of the most important democracy of the planet who claimed to possess a firm belief in democratic norms. But annually this biggest democracy celebrates its republic day with showing lethal arms to the planet because it’s also the world’s largest arms importer.

And if of these problems exist then i feel democratic states are following the recommendation of former French military ruler Napoleon to rule the country. Where he said, “The true policy of the govt is to form use of aristocracy, but under the forms and within the spirit of democracy.”

And if this is often democracy than do u think there’s a requirement to completely redefine it or even abolish it entirely in future? this is often still a debatable question.
